From April to November 2025, the Social Science Department of the Middle School embarked on a transformative journey designed to redefine the classroom experience for students in Grades 6 to 8. Under the dedicated guidance of Ms. Prachi Goel, Ms. Fiona Jose, and Ms. Sheetal Kulkarni, a structured series of initiatives was launched to move beyond traditional rote learning, focusing instead on strengthening academic rigor and enriching the holistic development of every learner.
The academic term commenced with the implementation of the Notebook (NB) Protocol, a foundational step that instilled a sense of pride and systematic organization in students' written work. This emphasis on curated presentation set the stage for more collaborative endeavors, such as the "Buddies for Weak Students" initiative. By pairing peers, the department fostered a compassionate ecosystem where academic support became a shared responsibility, ensuring that no student was left behind in the pursuit of conceptual clarity.
Innovation remained at the heart of the department’s strategy. To challenge young minds, the question paper patterns were revamped to prioritize critical thinking over memorization. Within the classroom, the traditional lecture model gave way to student-centric strategies like flip learning, peer correction, and research-based presentations. These methods empowered students to take ownership of their education, sharpening their communication skills and encouraging independent inquiry. The curriculum was further brought to life through experiential projects; notably, the terrarium-making activity allowed students to build miniature ecosystems, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical geography and environmental stewardship.
Beyond the textbooks, the Social Science Department remained committed to global awareness and civic duty. Students commemorated Armistice Day, reflecting on the profound themes of peace and history through interactive discussions and creative expression. This connection to the real world is set to continue with an upcoming guest speaker session focused on the Indian Judiciary, providing students with an insider’s perspective on the legal fabric of the nation.
These initiatives seamlessly align with the GIIS 9 Gems framework, particularly in the areas of Academic Excellence, Personality Development, and Universal Values. By integrating UN Sustainable Development Goals; such as Quality Education (SDG 4) and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16), the department has ensured that its students are not just high achievers, but globally conscious citizens ready to contribute meaningfully to the world.
