On April 27, 2026, the auditorium of GIIS KL became a hub of vital conversation as the school organized a comprehensive Menstrual Health and Personal Hygiene Awareness Program for students of Grades 6 to 8. This significant initiative was designed to educate young learners on the essential aspects of hygiene and the natural physical transitions associated with puberty, directly aligning with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, as well as the school’s 9 GEMS framework; specifically Gem 7 (Universal Values and Ethics) and Gem 8 (Community and Care).
The morning commenced at 10:00 am with a warm welcome and a brief introduction of the guest speaker, Dr. Sapna S. Patil. The session set an immediate tone of openness and respect. Dr. Patil utilized her expertise and a thoughtful, engaging approach to guide the girls through the nuances of menstrual health. By simplifying complex topics, she empowered the students to understand their bodies with confidence and helped dismantle long-standing social taboos surrounding the subject.
In a progressive move toward fostering a truly inclusive school environment, the second half of the workshop was dedicated to the boys of Grades 6 to 8. Dr. Patil interacted with them specifically to sensitize them to the realities of menstruation. By framing it as a natural biological process, the session aimed to reduce stigma and encourage the boys to become supportive allies. This inclusive strategy was instrumental in building empathy and ensuring that the conversation around menstrual hygiene is shared by the entire peer group, rather than being restricted to girls in isolation.
The program concluded on a high note with a visit from the Principal, who warmly greeted the assembly and expressed her heartfelt appreciation for Dr. Patil’s sincere efforts. She highlighted the importance of such workshops in shaping informed and compassionate individuals. To mark the school’s gratitude, a special felicitation was extended to Dr. Patil in recognition of her dedication and the lasting impact of her presentation. By 12:45 pm, the students departed with a renewed sense of awareness and the knowledge necessary to navigate their growth with dignity and care.
