Art for the Earth: GIIS KL Students Transform Waste into Wonders

In a vibrant display of creativity and environmental consciousness, students from Grades 6, 7, and 8 recently took part in an Inter-House Art Competition dedicated to celebrating Earth Day. Held on April 8, 2026, the classrooms were transformed into buzzing workshops where 179 young artists set out to prove that "waste" is merely a matter of perspective. Guided by their class and subject teachers, the students spent the IHC period exploring the intersection of traditional artistry and modern sustainability.

The competition was divided into three distinct challenges, each tailored to push the boundaries of resourcefulness. Grade 6 students took on the "Waste to Wow" challenge, where they breathed new life into discarded paper bags and cardboard. Using newspaper and paint, they created intricate Warli Art wall frames, blending ancient tribal patterns with the modern necessity of recycling.

Meanwhile, Grade 7 focused on the "Weave from Waste" initiative. Their task was to turn common plastic bottles and scrap rope into functional weaving baskets. This exercise not only tested their physical dexterity but also served as a powerful reminder of how long-lived materials can be diverted from landfills through clever reimagining.

Finally, Grade 8 cohort engaged in a "Creative Stencil Designing and Printing Competition." By utilizing scrap book sheets to hand-cut stencils, students experimented with fabric printing, learning the technical skills of textile design while adhering to the principles of reuse.

This activity mirrors Gem 5: Innovation and Creativity by challenging students to see beyond the surface of everyday objects. The ability to look at a piece of scrap cardboard or a plastic bottle and envision a luxury décor item or a functional tool is the very definition of innovative thinking; a skill that will serve these students well as they become the environmental stewards of tomorrow.
