On 16th January 2026, the school field at GIIS KL transformed into a vibrant hub of culture and gratitude as the community gathered for the annual Harvest Festival Celebration. All students and teachers united to honor nature’s bounty and the tireless spirit of farmers. This grand event, now in its third consecutive year, was led by the Cambridge Events and Assembly Coordinator in collaboration with the CCA and CBSE teams, creating a spirit of joy and togetherness that resonated across the entire campus.
While the harvest season is known by various names across India, such as Makar Sankranti, Bihu, and Lohri, the GIIS KL celebration centered on Pongal, the traditional harvest festival most cherished by the Indian community in Malaysia. The morning began with an energetic cultural assembly hosted by emcees Nithiyananthini and Nikhilesh from Cambridge Year 10. The program opened with an elegant instrumental dance by CBSE Standard 5 students, followed by a lively performance to the song "Kalathruvizha" by CBSE Standard 6. The segment reached a powerful crescendo with a contemporary cultural dance by Cambridge Year 9 students, highlighting heritage and identity through a medley of rhythmic hits.
The celebration peaked with the traditional Pongal preparation ritual. Three clay pots were ceremoniously placed on the field as milk was boiled to symbolize prosperity. As the milk bubbled and overflowed, the entire gathering echoed with the joyful chants of “Pongalo Pongalo!” signaling the welcoming of good fortune. Freshly harvested rice, jaggery, nuts, and ghee were then added to create the auspicious dish, which was served with love to all present. Dressed in vibrant traditional attire, the students, administration, and staff fully embraced the festive spirit, fostering a strong sense of unity and cultural appreciation.
Beyond the festivities, the event was deeply rooted in the school’s 9GEMS framework and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By integrating values of Academic Excellence, Personality Development, and Community Care with SDG 15 (Life on Land), the school emphasized the importance of harmony with nature. This successful celebration was a testament to the hard work of the senior leaders, coordinators, and staff, whose dedication ensured that the essence of Pongal; gratitude, hard work, and community, was beautifully reflected throughout the day.
