A Celebration of New Beginnings: GIIS KL Honors India’s Diverse Heritage

The GIIS KL school field was alive with color and community spirit on 30th April 2026, as students and staff gathered for a Special Assembly dedicated to the Traditional New Year celebrations observed across various Indian states. From the festivities of Puthandu (Tamil New Year) to the vibrant traditions of Baisakhi, Bihu, Vishu, and Pohela Boishakh, the event served as a beautiful reminder of the shared cultural tapestry that unites the school’s diverse student body.

The assembly, which brought together the entire campus from Kindergarten to Grade 12, was expertly led by emcees Vedanth and Arpita from Grade 8. They opened the proceedings by explaining the significance of these diverse celebrations, which all mark a time of joy, gratitude, and renewal. By highlighting these various customs, the event showcased the school's dedication to Gem 4: Personality Development and Gem 7: Universal Values and Ethics, teaching students to take pride in their heritage while respecting the traditions of others.

The program opened with the Malaysian National Anthem, a nod to the school’s local roots, followed by soulful musical performances from the Grade 2 and 3 CBSE classes. The energy shifted as students from Grades 5, 7, and 8 presented a graceful devotional dance. Their performance was a journey across the map, blending the distinct rhythms of the Assamese Bihu with the spirited traditions of the North and South, perfectly embodying Gem 8: Community and Care.

The morning concluded with an encouraging address from the Principal and a heartfelt vote of thanks. As students posed for photos in their bright traditional attire, the field was filled with a sense of unity. This celebration of the Traditional New Year successfully bridged the gap between different customs, leaving the GIIS KL community with a deeper appreciation for the rich, multicultural spirit that defines the school.
