Talented students step up to the beat at Jhankaar dance festival

SINGAPORE, 30 MAY, 2018: GIIS Jhankaar 2018 - Dancing like Stars, was held at Global Indian International School (GIIS) Balestier Campus on 16th May 2018. An inter-school event that takes place annually, it attracts dancers from all age groups with talents in different dance forms ranging from traditional, contemporary, ballet, hip-hop to Bhangra.

For the first time, participants from different international schools across Singapore were invited to the event. More competitors with varying skills and experiences ensured tougher challenges for the participants. Students from GIIS Queenstown, GIIS East Coast, GIIS Balestier, Yuva Bharati International School and NPS International School were part of this spectacular Event.

The students’ talent, energy and hard work combined set the stage alive as they stepped up to the beat of their passion. The wisdom and experience of our talented judges, Ms. Manju Rajesh, Ms. Arpita Dutta, Ms. Saumi Ray, Ms. Meera Balasubramanian, Ms. Ramani Kashyap and Ms. Haritha Haridas helped to give the contestants a fair evaluation and outcome.

The movements, rhythm, mudras and expressions of the performances culminated into a magical spell that gave expression to thousands of unspoken words. With 305 participants, Jhankaar 2018 was indeed an extravaganza.

The students at GIIS Jhankaar 2018 competed in four categories in both Solo and Group competitions:

Sub Junior: Classes 1 - 3,

       Junior: Classes 4-6,

Sub Senior: Classes 5 - 8

       Senior: Classes 9 - 12.

For the Solo performances, the genres included Indian Classical, fusion and International folk dance, whereas for Group performances, the genres consisted of International folk and fusion, with each performance being unique.

The grandeur of the traditional classical performances like Bharathanatyam and Kathak reflected the diverse cultures of India. Equally appealing were the vibrant folk dances like Sambalpuri and Rajasthani Ghoomar which projected the essence of Indian traditional community life along with African, Mexican and Native American dance which added versatility to this category.

Last but not least, vibrant performances in the Fusion Category bridged the gap between East and West. Each performance was complemented by elaborate costumes and an enthralling dance style and creative props.

A Mega Finals was held for the solo dance category where winners from all styles of dance competed with each other in the final rounds.  The Mega event brought forth new talents, wrote new success stories and showcased excellent team work.
