Nepal is going through one of its worst crises in recent history, starting with the massive earthquake on 25th April, followed by another on 12th May and the continuing aftershocks. The magnitude of human loss caused by the earthquake, its devastating impact on the lives of Nepal’s people, their livelihood, and the destruction of Nepal’s unique cultural heritage; has been a monumental tragedy. In all this calamity, it is heartening to see that people from across the globe have come together as one by lending every available expertise towards rebuilding the nation and doing everything possible to help it return to normalcy; drawing on the power of education, science and culture from the society at large.

While various organizations, the government and autonomous bodies are coming together to provide aid and relief to the citizens of Nepal; GIIS, as an institution that lays emphases on character building and inculcating a humanitarian approach towards education, urged its students to come forward and participate in the larger cause. Students of GIIS Noida collected 16 large boxes of biscuits, instant noodles, cartons of juices, medicines, toiletries, torches, batteries, snacks and dry ration like pulses, rice, sugar, milk powder, coffee and tea for the earthquake victims, which were handed over to the Nepal High Commission by Ms. Nandita Dasgupta, Ms. Deepika Kumar, Ms. Anchal Kapur and Mr. Naveen Pandey. The team was impressed by the efficient inventory management system of aid material and the humility and grace of accepting every bit of aid by the officials.

It was a privilege to meet the Ambassador of Nepal to the Republic of India H.E. Mr. Deep Kumar Upadhay, who acknowledged every little gift with much humility and thanked the GIIS staff .“Please tell your children and their parents that we are extremely humbled by the gesture of humanity, generosity and kindness”, were the words of the Ambassador.

“When I met HE Mr. Upadhay, my immediate thoughts were that as a leader one has to absorb a lot of pressure whenever there is an extreme calamity. The buzz of activities at the High Commission was so precisely organised that I was impressed to witness what it is to stand by people in times of need.” Ms. Nandita Dasgupta, Principal GIIS Noida

“Human beings have the gift to participate in happiness and pain of others. Participation is no charity but an act of sharing that benefits both the receiver and the giver. It is this attitude of compassion that I urge to invoke in our students and the disaster of Nepal is not just the tragedy of another nation but our tragedy too. ”

”Thousands of children have become victims of this massive earthquake. Our children need to be sensitized to the needs and misfortunes of others. When we speak to them in simple words, they understand clearly and logically. My child gave his own toy along with the other items as a present to some child who would play with it. I am humbled to see that most of his friends felt empathy towards the children of Nepal.”
