Exhibition of Hindu Gods and Goddesses at Eurasia Museum Yokohama

Exhibition of Hindu Gods and GoddessesStudents from Grade 5~8 went for a unique exhibition organized at Eurasia museum in Yokohama on December 11, 2012. A total of 21 students attended the exhibition which was undertaken by the department of Social Studies at GIIS Tokyo.

The students were given a detailed account of the history of Indian merchants in Yokohama by Mr. ChandruAdvani. Mr. Advanis ancestors are believed to be the first to arrive in Yokohama about 150 years ago. They were told about:

  • The Indian merchants achievements.
  • Foreign trade statistics on silk fabrics between India and Japan.
  • The great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the monument built in memory of the 24 Indian people lost in the quake called "Drinking Fountain" in Yamashita Park, Yokohama.
  • Establishment of Yokohama Hindu Association.
  • Establishment of India-Japan diplomatic relations and Indian merchants return to Yokohama.
  • Mr. ChandruAdvanis contribution to India and Japans Diplomatic relation.
  • Friendship exchange of Yokohama and Mumbai as sister cities.
  • An elephant named Indira, presented by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to Japan.

Students also had the opportunity to see the unique display of Hindu Gods and Goddesses painted by the renowned Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma whose paintings are considered to be among the best examples of the fusion of Indian traditions with the techniques of European academic art. The students were explained about each painting in detail by the curator of the museum, Ms. Fukuhara. Later the students and teachers went to Yamashita Park and Osambashi Pier as a walking tour by senior vice Director Mr.Inoue.

GIIS students had a wonderful, enthralling and indebt view of the exhibition.
