Litter-Less initiative by GIIS Indore students; exchanging ideas through Global Student Exchange program

Book week

The Anti-Litter campaign, as a part of the Global Student Exchange Program, was organized for the students of GIIS Balestier and Indore. To bring out the importance of maintaining cleanliness in our surroundings, each campus took the campaign to a whole new exciting level. Grade 6 students from each campus carried various activities with immense enthusiasm and zeal which could be seen in the activities they carried out to support the cause.

The objective behind organizing such a campaign was to engage and educate children/young people on the issue of litter, and encourage them to make positive choices that helps them in contributing towards a cleaner and greener nation.

Students of GIIS-INDORE did their individual efforts to keep the city clean. During Diwali children took the campaign to their personal spaces to spread the message of no-litter in their areas. They even presented Thank you cards to the safai karmis of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), who work day and night to keep the city neat and clean. Anti-Litter subject has been a part of the GIIS Curriculum since the very beginning and students of all the campuses take active part in it.

The anti-litter campaign for Balestier kicked off with the students of Class 6 acting as change agents. The activities planned were campaign on clean sweep @ Canteen, Classrooms and local areas. A beach cleaning session was also organized by students of GIIS Balestier in liaison with NEA Singapore. Students were greeted by a long line of plastic bottles, Styrofoam’s, cigarettes, etc. Around 3kg of non-biodegradable wastes were collected by the student volunteers and were properly disposed.

The whole idea behind conducting this awareness campaign was to raise awareness on the effect of litter and waste in the local environment and wider community. Also to increase students’ knowledge and practical skills in preventing and managing litter and waste, and influence others by communicating through multimedia and other channels which each team did by showcasing their work on the Facebook page made for the same purpose.
