GIIS Dubai Students Engage in COP28, Advocating Sustainability and Innovation

Dubai, 8th Dec 2023 : The Global Indian International School (GIIS) Dubai campus witnessed a landmark event as students from grades 9 to 12 embarked on an educational journey to the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP28) held in Expo City Dubai. The students' participation marked a significant stride towards environmental consciousness and global citizenship. 

COPs are convened under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a multilateral treaty adopted in 1992. The meetings serve as the formal meetings of the Conference of the Parties - hence the acronym.

The visit to COP28, an event lauded for its emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and collective action, provided a platform for these budding minds to explore, engage, and advocate for a greener future. Guided by their commitment to learning and a sense of responsibility towards the environment, the GIIS students embraced the opportunity with fervor.

Led by a team of dedicated educators, the students delved into a myriad of exhibits, discussions, and initiatives aimed at addressing pressing environmental challenges. They were exposed to a diverse range of cutting-edge technologies, innovative solutions, and thought-provoking conversations centered around sustainable development.The visit allowed these young minds to witness firsthand the UAE's commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability. The students were enthralled by the futuristic ideas and technologies on display, exemplifying the UAE's proactive stance in addressing global environmental concerns.

Speaking about their experience, Aarushi Nalawade, a grade 11 student, expressed, "COP28 has been eye-opening. It's inspiring to see how different countries and organizations are coming together to find solutions for a sustainable future. I feel motivated to contribute to such initiatives."The students actively engaged in dialogues, absorbing insights from world leaders, environmentalists, and industry experts. They passionately discussed ideas, shared their perspectives, and sought ways to translate learning into actionable steps for a more sustainable tomorrow.

Mr.Siju Philip ,Head of GCIE Dubai and the coordinator for the visit remarked, "Seeing our students wholeheartedly engage with such passion at COP28 is incredibly uplifting. Empowering our youth with the knowledge and drive to initiate positive change is paramount. They're not just the leaders of tomorrow; they're actively shaping a better future today.”

Mr.Antony Koshy ,Principal GIIS Dubai said “Participation in COP28 serves as a testament to the institution's commitment to nurturing well-rounded global citizens equipped with the skills, knowledge, and values to make a meaningful impact on the world stage.”

The visit concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment among the students to implement sustainable practices within their school community and beyond. Armed with newfound knowledge and inspiration, they returned to their campus, poised to be catalysts for change in their local and global communities.

The GIIS Dubai students' journey at COP28 exemplifies the power of education in shaping future leaders and advocates for sustainability, echoing the conference's call to Unite, Act, and Deliver for a more sustainable and equitable world.
