Renowned for their strong bond and dedication to preserving the environment, the Higashi Kasai school community recently collaborated for an impactful cleaning event along the Arakawa river in Nishi Kasai.

Organised with meticulous planning and passion, the initiative served as a shining example of community-driven environmental stewardship. Two weeks of meticulous planning culminated in a pivotal general meeting at the local school, where instructions were disseminated to all participants, setting the stage for a successful undertaking. Led by the members of Tokyo River friends NGO, the collective embarked on a purposeful journey towards the designated cleaning site, an area laden with challenges yet brimming with the promise of transformation. The event garnered an impressive participation of 35 enthusiastic students from classes 6-8, accompanied by a dedicated team of 5 staff members.

The participants received detailed guidelines on the effective collection and segregation of the diverse array of debris that had marred the natural landscape. Clad in protective gear, including gloves and long boots, the volunteers fearlessly waded into the challenging terrain, braving the muddy expanses and overgrown grass to retrieve discarded items ranging from PET bottles and glass containers to metal cans, clothing, footwear, and miscellaneous large metal pieces. While some diligently combed the concrete areas for debris-filled baskets, others focused on the crucial task of meticulously sorting the collected waste into distinct categories, including burnable materials, plastic, metal, and glass.

The remarkable event not only contributed to a cleaner environment but also fostered a stronger sense of camaraderie and responsibility within the school community, setting a promising precedent for future collaborative endeavours in the pursuit of a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.
