Dr Kiran Bedi's inspiring session at GIIS SMART Campus

On Feb 1, GIIS SMART Campus had the honour of hosting Dr Kiran Bedi, India's First Woman IPS Officer, as part of the Leadership Lecture Series. Dr Bedi's visit left an indelible mark on students, combining leadership insights with a unique approach to maintaining composure during the rigours of academic life.

During the interactive session and panel discussion, Dr Kiran Bedi emphasised the significance of time management and the ambition to shape one's destiny. Dr Bedi stressed that what one reads, sees, hears, and experiences shapes them. “ I own a lot of grounded value systems to the upbringing at the school and at home.” she quoted.

Discussing the importance of passion, Dr Bedi remarked, "Something is inborn, and something is acquired. The inborn qualities also drive you to acquire more." When asked how she managed to gain proficiency in both academics and sports, Dr Bedi said, "It's very simple because I wanted both." She elaborated by explaining that when you want something, you find the time. That’s the key. "I valued my time so much, and that is the reason I became the first student in India in any university to achieve two scholarships, one for academics and one for sports. There was an inner love for education and an inner love for sports."

Addressing the students' concerns about stress, particularly in programmes like the International Baccalaureate (IB), Dr Bedi offered a distinctive and practical stress-relief technique. She encouraged students to close their eyes for two minutes, take deep breaths, and express gratitude by thinking about all the people who have supported and guided them—teachers, parents, mentors, and friends. Dr Bedi's stress-busting gratitude technique provides a valuable and applicable strategy for students to navigate the challenges they may encounter during their educational journey.

Dr Bedi also urged students to write their stories and prioritise collaboration over competition. Her parting words, "You are the chosen one," deeply inspired the next generation of leaders at GIIS SMART Campus. Dr Bedi's message about gratitude and early volunteer work deeply resonated with everyone. Her wisdom left a significant mark, highlighting the importance of initiatives like the Leadership Lecture Series in broadening perspectives and connecting students with leaders from various fields.
