Young ambassadors from GIIS in Model United Nations

GIIS Delegates
GIIS Delegates ready to represent their assigned countries at the various committee sessions

Global Indian International School (GIIS) students from IB Year 1 participated in the Yale-NUS first Asia Pacific Model United Nations conference held at Yale-NUS College in Singapore from 22 to 24 January 2016.

The conference simulated various committees in the United Nations and was designed specifically for high school students. With the involvement of 1000 participants from over 30 countries around the world, it was one of the most academically rigorous Model United Nations Conferences in South-East Asia.

During the conference, students also debated and discussed various pressing issues faced by the world today. Topics at the conference included social, security, economic, and humanitarian issues.

The first day comprised an opening ceremony and one committee session to get all the participants warmed up for the approaching debates. The session provided students a chance to familiarise themselves with their committee members. The second day focused on raw debate and members were focused on understanding and resolving the issues presented in a rigorous, systematic, and considerate manner. The day was dominated by intense speeches, working plans, resolutions and amendments, which pervaded the conference halls. On the third day, the various committees closed up the remaining issues and finished their resolutions, with the conference coming to a successful end.

To make the event more memorable, a delegate dance was held at Gardens By The Bay, to allow the participants to relax after their exhausting discussions and debates. A closing ceremony was graced by the presence of the Singapore Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Vivian Balakrishnan. With the programme conclusion, GIIS students left Yale-NUS College with a sense of achievement and experience of the true workings of one of the most important organisations in the world, the United Nations.
