Kindergarten is the class for children to develop their social and intellectual skills. Encouraging the children to develop social values will help them to become compassionate adults.

With this in mind, the Department of GIIS KL has come up with many interesting and fun- filled activities. The values that were chosen to be instilled and inculcated are Caring, Cooperation, Independence and Honesty, within the Community and family.

In the month of June, the quality of Caring was discussed in class. Children were encouraged to talk about who cared for them and also how they could care for others. They spoke about how they cared for each other in the class and at home.

Teachers also shared the importance of caring for each other and how to take care of the environment. A ‘Caring Tree’ was put up in the class to emphasize caring acts. The children were encouraged and rewarded with a ‘Caring Heart’ for any caring acts that they carried out in the class. For example, sharing their erasers, helping their friends to pack their bags, arranging the classroom etc.

At the culmination of this activity the children made cards to give to staff in the school who cared for them.

KG 1 Daisy marched down to the Guard House to thank the ‘Guard Uncles’ for keeping them safe and secure in the school. The children made a cute ’Thank You’ card. They also made colourful ‘We Care’ badges for the guards. The guards were all smiles when they received the cards and badges and proudly pinned them up.

The school bus and van drivers were also appreciated for their role in caring for the children’s safety. The KG 1 Lily children showed their love by presenting them with cards and chocolates. The children thanked the drivers for bringing them to school every day and also taking them back home safely.

As a token of appreciation, the children gifted Ms Shakila, the Book Store Incharge with a small potted plant which was decorated lovingly with cute little hearts made by the children. Ms. Shakila was truly touched by the love showered on her.

KG 2 Rose thanked the nurses at the sick bay. This they expressed by means of a song. They made a memento as a token of gratitude. The nurses were overwhelmed and moved to tears by this gesture and said that this was the first time ever their work was really appreciated. The nurses hugged all the children and thanked them for the lovely memento.

KG 2 Tulip said thank you to the maids or ‘kakak’ as they are addressed by the children. They are the people with whom the children experience selfless caring on a day to day basis. They see them cleaning the classrooms and bathrooms and they are there to care for and help the children in the washroom. The maids were pleasantly surprised when they were invited to the classroom where the children gave them thank you cards and chocolates. The class thanked them in chorus for the care they gave the children every day.

Finally the children of KG 2 Orchid went to the office to show their appreciation to the Principal Ms. Mamta Bhargava and Directors Mr. Manoj Nair and Mr. Manish Jain. The children first went in to see the Principal, followed by Mr. Manoj and Mr. Manish. They sang a thank you song and thanked them for their lovely classrooms. They then presented each one of them with a photo frame that they had lovingly made. Children also gave them a bottle of mineral water to remind them of the importance of drinking water. Ms. Mamta and the Directors appreciated the gesture with loving hugs and firm handshakes.
