GIIS Kuala Lumpur Campus (Primary) Celebrates Chinese New Year 2013

Chinese New YearChinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival in China, is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. A cycle of twelve years are observed, each named after an animal or mythical creature. Traditionally, the festival is celebrated to honour deities and ancestors.

Temples and homes are decorated with beautiful red lanterns. Chinese greet one other loudly saying ‘Gong Xi FaCai’ which means ‘Congratulations and be prosperous’. Children get money in a red envelope known as ‘AngPao’. Malaysia, with its significant Chinese population, observes the Chinese New Year as an important festival. The fortnight long celebration began on the 10th of February this year.

GIIS Kuala Lumpur Campus joined in the mirth and joy of celebrating the Year of the Snake. The Lion Dance was performed on 14 February 2013 to usher in the Chinese New Year at the campus. The show was enjoyed to the fullest by the children who cheered energetically for the performers.

The Chinese New Year special assembly was held at the Primary Campus, on 15 February. It was a splendid sight to witness participants adorned in colourful Cheongsams. The host for the assembly ushered a group of excited kindergarten children, who performed a Chinese dance welcoming the Chinese New Year in all its grandeur. This spectacular performance was followed by another astounding dance to a Chinese song by the children of Classes 1 and 2. The tiny drums used as props by these fervent dancers gave the performance a special charm. To end the program, a merry troop of Standards 3 and 4 sang a beautiful Chinese song, ‘where is spring...’ with elegant body movements and vocal music which left the crowd mesmerized.
