21st June: The world unfurled its yoga mats on Sunday, with millions across the globe turning out to celebrate the first International Yoga Day. It is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world. The Summer Solstice was suggested by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the International Day of Yoga, recognising the ancient Indian science@aps@s "holistic approach to health and well-being."

GIIS Ahmedabad Campus also celebrated the occasion to mark Yoga as a physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline that originated in India. Paying homage to Maharishi Patanjali, the @aps@father of Yoga@aps@ who compiled 195 Yoga Sutras that became the foundation of Yoga philosophy, the students displayed various forms of Yoga in presence of children, parents and teachers. It is said Yoga is the greatest souvenir left to us by our ancient sages. To reiterate its importance in our lives, GIIS invited Yoga Guru Mr. Jyotindra Dalal and Yoga Instructor Ms. Chilkha Joshi. Mr. Jyotindra Dalal conducted wonderful sessions with parents, teachers and students. He threw light upon the importance and benefits of Pranayams. He also showed the correct way of performing the 12 postures of "Suryanamaskara". Ms. Chilkha Joshi held sessions with students from Pre-Primary classes to Class-5 performing flexible Yoga asanas. To increase concentration in students, Ms. Chilkha Joshi conducted meditation sessions. The program was enriching and the children took an oath to make Yoga a part of their daily life.
