Embracing new beginning: A reflection on GIIS Ahmedabad’s Learning Checkpoints and Student-Led Conference

“You’re off to Great Places! Today is your Day! Your Mountain is waiting get on your way!” Dr. Seuss

In the journey of childhood, every footstep is marked with joy, learning, and growth. One such significant milestone in a child’s life is the Graduation Day ceremony - a momentous occasion that symbolizes the transition from early childhood to the beginning of formal education. It is a day filled with pride, excitement, and perhaps a few tears of nostalgic parents and teachers and most importantly, the young graduates themselves.

Kindergarten graduation ceremonies are not just about cute caps and gowns, they also represent a culmination of a year filled with exploration, discovery, and budding friendships. These pint-sized graduates have spent their days learning letters, numbers, shapes, and colours but more importantly, they have learned the value of cooperation, empathy and perseverance.

The K2 students of GIIS Ahmedabad initiated their first pilot learning - My Learning Checkpoint for K2 students and Student-Led Conference for K3 students, which is a progress tracker by parents. This is an innovative approach that renders the assessment process more holistic by inculcating parental perspectives.

‘K2-My Learning Checkpoint’ and ‘K3-Student-Led Conference’ are valuable steps between parents and educators to enrich the learning-teaching experience. Through this program, parents get an insight into their child’s academic journey, understand their achievements, and identify growth areas.

The kindergarten teachers prepared various learning stations with some concepts for Language and Literacy, Montessori, Second Language (Hindi), Mathematics, and Cultural activities.

To facilitate the process and ensure effectiveness, parents were given clear guidelines and instructions, outlining the assessment's purpose and guidance on how to conduct the activities. The rubric sheets were also shared with the parents to submit their observations for each station wherein parents had to select the ‘Glow either’ (if the child understood the concept) or the ‘Grow’ (areas where the child needs more experience) option.

This initiative helped parents gauge their child’s learning holistically by showing interest in the learning process. This also helped parents to observe their child’s development as a teacher and understand the learning curve. Bonding and collaboration of parents and teachers had to help our children emerge as the best version of themselves.

Here are some of the appreciative messages and testimonials from parents which encourage us to strive for excellence.

Ravi Dadhich, father of Chirayu Dadhich, a K2G student said, “It is a pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful event with such a concept. The most difficult decision for a parent is to admit their toddlers to a world-class school and I am extremely happy with my decision. I must compliment the entire school, teachers and their efforts to ensure that every child participates. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the teachers and Principal sir.”

Bhoomika Trivedi, mother of Parakh Trivedi shared, “I would like to thank the entire community of GIIS - Minal ma’am and Surashree ma’am. I have seen my child growing and this initiative is amazing. Thank you so much for setting up this event of Graduation Day.”

As these beloved students move forward, we at GIIS Ahmedabad extend our heartfelt wishes for their success and growth. May they continue to strive for excellence while upholding the values instilled in them during their time at GIIS and make a positive impact in the world. Once again a hearty congratulations to all the K2 students.
