TOKYO, 10 OCTOBER, 2018: GIIS Tokyo officially launched its yearlong commemorations for the landmark 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi that is approaching in the year 2019. The celebrations began on 2nd October. The secondary and Primary schools both participated with equal zest in the celebrations.
The Morning Assembly at the Higashi Kasai High School Campus began with a prayer followed by a spectacular skit, performed by students and their teacher Ms Sneha Shah, that inculcated Gandhiji’s values in day-to-day lives. A Grade 9 student dressed in Gandhiji’s trademark white dhoti and wire-rim glasses, emulated his teachings. The skit was penned by Siya Deshpande of Grade 9 and Dhvani Patil of Grade 8.
Two Cambridge Lower Secondary students gave a PowerPoint presentation on the milestones of Gandhiji’s life. The presentation was followed by a quiz on his life. The students also gave a speech marking the occasion and paid homage to the humanitarian values Gandhiji stood for. Senior school teachers Ms Kavita Patil and Ms Shivali Handa addressed the audience and remembered Gandhiji’s unparalleled contribution to society. School choir sang Vande Mataram - the famous Indian patriotic song.
At the Nishi Kasai Primary school campus, the special assembly was organised unitedly by all the four houses, conducted by school teachers - Mr David, Mr Vrushali, Mr Pavethy and Ms Jaya. In the special assembly, the students were informed about the principle of nonviolence and how can it be incorporated in everyday life. Simple measures like being positive and controlling temper were communicated to students to make it practical.
All the four houses prepared a collaborative presentation on Gandhiji’s timeline, his birth, and education. The main events of his life that project his teachings of honesty, non-violence and love for his country were depicted through small skits. The students took part with a lot of enthusiasm and demonstrated their best acting skills. The audience was left enthralled by their meticulous performance.
The school has planned a myriad of meaningful activities for the entire year which will be based on Gandhiji’s life and principles.
