Purple Day and Grandparents’ Day celebrated with enthusiasm

In order to show their love, respect and admiration for grandparents, GIIS Tokyo celebrated the Purple Colour Day followed by Grandparent’s Day celebration in September 2018.

To enhance knowledge about colours, GIIS Tokyo celebrates various Colour Days for kindergarten throughout the year. For the Purple Colour Day, the students enjoyed making a variety of purple coloured objects like wind chimes, witch hat, vampires, grapes, spiders and decorated their classrooms and corridors. The day also marked the celebration of Grandparent’s Day.

Purple Colour Day was chosen to celebrate the Grandparents’ Day as purple is a rarely occurring colour in nature and has a sacred connotation. Lavender, orchid, lilac, and violet flowers are considered delicate and precious.

Also, the third Monday of September in Japan is celebrated as Aged Day (Keiro no Hi) every year. It is a Japanese designated public holiday celebrated to honour elderly citizens.

Grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren. They are often seen as "stress buffers," "roots," "arbitrators," and "supporters."

The event at GIIS Tokyo has become a popular school tradition.
