GIIS Tokyo students pledged for a better planet with the Environment Project in French

At GIIS Tokyo, the learning process is always engaging, relevant, challenging and significant.

The IB PYP students from the Higashi Kasai campus decided to partner with their facilitator on “The Environment Project ” in French class, which would allow them to take ownership of becoming global change makers and address the most pressing need of the hour, climate change.

Our students pledged for a better planet and they were intrinsically motivated and inclined to participate, acknowledging their rights and responsibilities as individuals.

The IB PYP Grade 4 students brainstormed and listed the fundamental objectives of the environment project and apprised themselves about the timeline, while being mindful of their submissions, hence honing in on their language skills and self-management skills (time management and goal setting).

Together with their French teacher,  Ms Sneha, they were given opportunities to explore a concept and made use of their preferred digital tools, each week. Through this activity, the students became self-aware and reflected on their actions before making decisions.

They were also enthusiastic and curious about climate change, which resulted in a brainstorming session and co-creating the causes and effects of climate change, as per their understanding.

For combating climate change, students researched and came up with their own solutions like spreading awareness through posters, poems in French, stories, and much more. Additionally, they were divided into collaborative small groups, to develop their language skills, and acquire new vocabulary in French, which was executed through translations of our environment.

During this student-centric journey, all the students were caring, committed to service and acted to make a positive difference in the world. They worked independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. They also embraced the 21st-century learning skills and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and made use of technology to find, structure content, present and share findings.

The Environment project in French instilled confidence in young students and motivated them to spearhead change and save our planet from further environmental disruption.
