GIIS Tokyo Applies Total Quality Management by Implementing Gemba Stations

Continuous improvement is all about learning, discovery, and growth.

GIIS Tokyo makes history by implementing Gemba stations at School.

Yet another step towards applying Total Quality Management was the idea of implementing Gemba stations at school. This was conceptualized under the leadership of GCEE Head Mr Rathin Khandhadia with an objective to bring visibility to students’ quality circles, best practices and kaizens which enhances their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Gemba stations were set up at various locations of both the campuses of GIIS Tokyo. The stations displayed various posters of various developmental implementations and best practices in Tokyo.

This Gemba Station was formally inaugurated by Mr Sanjeev Manchanda First Secretary, (Information, Education and Culture) (IEC Wing) Embassy of India, Tokyo along with Country Director Mr Sumit Mishra, Principal, Ms Madhu Khanna and GCEE Associate Director, Mr Rathin Khandhadia on June 3rd, 2022.

Gemba Walk is derived from the Japanese word “Gemba” which means “the real place”, so it is often literally defined as the act of seeing where the actual work or improvement happens.

At GIIS Tokyo, based on quality circles, best practices and Kaizens various departments have done many continual improvements. These are often informed only within a class or to a limited group of people. Looking, listening, and understanding Gemba provides some insights into what's happening, and to actually understand the ins and outs of processes and improvements which can be replicated and shared.

Through the display of various Gemba stations, all such practices done by one group or department will be noticeable and visible to all others. Observing, listening, and adopting the improvements made at one will help others to inspire, encourage, and imbibe small changes every day.  This is very relevant and important in the education industry which is rooted in personal and professional advancement. The GCEE department supports, promotes, and motivates all such initiatives to nurture the supporting environment for school success.
