Climate Adaptation in Action: Building a Resilient Singapore

The Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Singapore 2026 was held on 19 September 2026 at the GIIS SMART Campus Singapore, bringing together young people, policymakers, researchers and sustainability practitioners for a full day of discussion and engagement on climate adaptation and Singapore’s climate future.Recognised under YOUNGO, the official children and youth constituency to the UNFCCC, the conference provided participants with an opportunity to understand the international climate process, engage with experts and policymakers, and develop youth perspectives on climate action in Singapore. The conference began with a session led by Dr Linda Yanti Suliswati, who introduced participants to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the international climate governance process. She also discussed her research and professional work, helping participants understand how international climate negotiations, research and policy are connected. The session provided an important foundation for the rest of the conference, allowing participants to place Singapore’s climate policies and adaptation challenges within the wider international climate framework. The programme continued with a student conversation with Ms Tin Pei Ling, Member of Parliament. The discussion focused on Singapore’s climate plans and the role of government in responding to climate change and strengthening national resilience. The conversation allowed students to engage directly with a policymaker and consider how national climate priorities are developed and implemented, as well as the ways in which young people can participate in conversations surrounding public policy. The conference then brought together experts from different areas of the sustainability and climate sector for an Expert Panel. The panel featured Tim Wedemeyer JLL, Dr. Aniq Ahsan and Dr Linda Yanti Sulisiwati. The discussion exposed participants to different professional perspectives on climate action, sustainability and the challenges involved in translating climate ambitions into practical outcomes. The Expert Discussion Panel was moderated by Aashay Chouhan, a sustainability professional and climate practitioner.Following the Expert Panel, participants heard from young people actively involved in climate and sustainability work. The panel featured Norlastina Hamid, who has participated in international climate processes including COP; Nikki Lee from the National University of Singapore (NUS); and Uday Singh Yadava, a climate advocate. The discussion centred on young people's experiences with climate action, the challenges of turning climate concern into meaningful participation, and the role of youth in contributing to climate conversations at both national and international levels.Participants subsequently divided into five breakout groups, each focusing on a specific climate and sustainability issue relevant to Singapore:Reclaimed Land and Coastal ProtectionEnergy Reset and Carbon TaxesSustainable Living and WasteGreen CommutesFood SecurityThe breakout sessions provided participants with an opportunity to move from listening to active discussion. Each group examined its respective issue, discussed challenges and possible responses, and developed ideas and recommendations from a youth perspective. The conference concluded with closing remarks and a discussion of the next stage of the LCOY process. A key outcome of LCOY Singapore 2026 is the continued development of the LCOY Singapore National Youth Statement. The ideas and recommendations generated throughout the conference will contribute to the drafting process, allowing the perspectives raised by young participants across the different sessions and breakout groups to be consolidated into a youth-led document. The draft statement is intended to be submitted through the YOUNGO process as a youth contribution towards COP, connecting the perspectives developed in Singapore with the wider international youth climate process.LCOY Singapore 2026 brought together international climate governance, national policy, expert knowledge and youth perspectives within a single platform. Through presentations, conversations, panel discussions and youth-led breakout sessions, participants were able to examine climate adaptation not only as an environmental issue, but also as a question of governance, infrastructure, energy, mobility, consumption and food security. Most importantly, the conference established a platform for young people to contribute directly to the development of youth climate priorities for Singapore. The continued work on the National Youth Statement represents the next step in carrying these discussions beyond the conference and into the broader youth climate process leading towards COP.

The session aimed to help students understand the importance of treating everyone with kindness, fairness and dignity, while encouraging them to question traditional gender stereotypes.Through age-appropriate examples and interactive discussions, students explored common assumptions such as “Boys should do this” or “Girls should do that” and reflected on how these beliefs can limit individual interests, abilities and choices. They were encouraged to understand that activities such as dancing, cooking, sports, science and art are open to everyone, irrespective of gender. The session highlighted the importance of breaking gender stereotypes and promoting equal opportunities and responsibilities. Students discussed how household chores, including cooking, cleaning, organizing and caregiving, should be shared equally among family members. They also explored the importance of emotional expression, understanding that feelings such as sadness, fear, worry and disappointment are natural and expressing them is a sign of emotional awareness rather than weakness.Another key focus of the session was respectful communication and personal boundaries. Students learned the difference between genuine compliments and unnecessary comments that may make others feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. They were encouraged to avoid sexist jokes, offensive remarks, teasing and bullying, and to choose words that promote a safe and inclusive environment. To help students put these learnings into practice, the SAM Rule was introduced. The simple approach encourages students to Stop before saying or doing something that could hurt someone, Ask themselves whether their words or actions are kind, respectful and necessary, and Move On if they are inappropriate. This practical tool helped students understand the importance of thinking before speaking or acting. The session emphasized that gender equality begins with everyday attitudes, words and actions. By encouraging empathy, emotional awareness, shared responsibilities and respect for individual choices, the discussion helped students recognize their role in creating an environment where everyone feels valued and included. The session concluded with the message that everyone deserves kindness, dignity, respect and equality. It reinforced the importance of engaging boys in conversations about gender sensitivity and empowering them to challenge stereotypes and contribute towards building a safe, inclusive and gender-equal society.

They shared interesting facts about the animals, including their names, sounds and food habits. The activity provided an opportunity for children to enhance their vocabulary, develop communication skills and build confidence in expressing their thoughts in front of others.Teachers encouraged the children to actively participate by identifying animals, imitating their sounds and observing the different elements of the farm. The interactive sessions kept the young learners engaged while strengthening their understanding of animals and their natural surroundings. The initiative reflected GIIS Balewadi’s emphasis on experiential and play-based learning, enabling children to explore concepts beyond textbooks and classroom discussions. By creating a realistic farm-like environment, the activity made learning more engaging, meaningful and memorable while nurturing observation skills, curiosity, creativity and communication among young learners.

Learning to Care: Inside Kindergarten's Responsible Week

From September 21st to September 25th, 2026, the Kindergarten classrooms were filled with enthusiasm and learning as students participated in Responsible Week. Designed to cultivate essential life values from an early age, this event focused on fostering independence, self-discipline, and a genuine care for oneself, peers, and the environment. Through age-appropriate, hands-on activities, the week aligned directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), while reinforcing core 9 Gems values such as social and emotional intelligence, self-discipline, and ethics.Throughout the week, students engaged in targeted experiential learning tailored to their development levels. Our students from Kindergarten 1 took ownership of their shared environment by taking active responsibility for their classroom space. They learned the importance of organizing learning materials, keeping their surroundings clean, and treating equipment with respect and care. This practical focus helped instill positive habits and a collective pride in maintaining their daily space.Meanwhile, our Kindergarten 2 students embarked on a heartwarming home-school connection project. Each student was entrusted with a toy duckie to take home and care for across the week. By feeding, playing with, and ensuring the safety of their duckie companion, the children practiced empathy and nurturing routines. This interactive activity provided a tangible way for young learners to understand what it means to be responsible for another creature's well-being.By connecting daily routines with foundational values, Responsible Week succeeded in creating an empowering environment where young children learned that even small actions contribute to a respectful and thoughtful community.
