The students and teachers of Global Indian International School (GIIS), Hadapsar, celebrated the colourful festival of Makar Sankranti. This festival, celebrated across India under various names such as Lohri in North India, Sukarat in Central India, Magh Bihu in Assam, and Pongal in Tamil Nadu, holds cultural and agricultural significance. Although Makar Sankranti traditionally falls on January 14, this early celebration brought festive cheer to the campus.
Dressed in traditional attire, the students learned about the festival's importance through a line-up of engaging activities. Nursery students created Lohri crafts using paper and ice cream sticks, while KG 1 children used grains to colour their creative depictions of pots and sugarcane. Meanwhile, KG 2 students enthusiastically drew kites and the sun, reinforcing the tradition of worshiping the sun god and kite flying during the festival. These hands-on activities not only introduced the cultural richness of Makar Sankranti but also encouraged creativity and teamwork.
Celebrating festivals in schools plays a crucial role in encouraging cultural awareness and inclusivity among students. It provides a platform for children to learn about diverse traditions and values, promoting respect and understanding for different cultures. Such celebrations also strengthen the bond between students, teachers, and parents, creating a sense of community and shared joy. Involving students in festival-related activities nurtures their creativity and critical thinking. By engaging in crafts, performances, and discussions, children develop a deeper appreciation for cultural heritage while honing their social and collaborative skills. Festivals celebrated in schools thus act as a bridge, connecting young minds to the rich tapestry of traditions, making learning joyful and meaningful.
The Makar Sankranti celebrations at GIIS Hadapsar proved to be a delightful blend of fun and learning, leaving students and teachers enriched with cultural pride and memorable experiences.
