Students made aware of safe food handling practices and procedures on World Food Safety Day

The primary grades of the Global Indian International School (GIIS), Smart Campus Hadapsar celebrated World Food Safety Day on June 8th, 2021 to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent foodborne diseases and detect and manage risks associated with it.

In order to spread awareness about food safety, teachers educated the students of Gr. 2 about the importance of food storage, prevention, refrigeration techniques, identifying and learning how to read the packing and the product expiry dates on the milk and food packets. Moreover, they were also briefed about food hygiene by keeping the food covered, cleaning kitchen counters using sponges, disinfectants, and proper sanitization, among others.

The children were also given an experiment to do as an assignment where they would observe five different food items and their decomposition process. They also shared their videos of themselves showing and explaining their observations on food safety.

Teachers also highlighted some of the reports which showcased massive health impacts because of unsafe food and also highlighted the need for strong and sustained action. Lack of safe food creates a vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition which further overburdens public health services, disrupts social and economic progress, and detracts from the quality of life as well as the future.

To address this problem, the respective class teachers introduced basic steps to identify basic food safety measures to keep the communities and people around us safe from foodborne disease and to protect students' health for a better tomorrow.

Safe food handling practices and procedures are thus implemented and taught to curb these risks to prevent further harm to students due to unsafe food practices. Food safety is relatively a new development in human history that is intimately tied to change in the way our young minds live and eat.

Students learn each and every guideline taught by the teachers through various exercises and they really enjoyed the session as they got to learn several new things.
