Sensory Week organized to develop understanding of kids through experiential learning

The Global Indian International School (GIIS), Smart Campus Hadapsar organised Sensory week under the GMP Program. The Sensory Week was conducted during the period of  26th July to 30th July 2021.  The key objective behind conducting these activities is to develop their learning capacity through hands-on activities.

Understanding the importance of sensory play can help for a child’s development, cognition, and behaviour. As children manipulate objects and explore through their senses, they also develop key strategies to problemsolving.

During the sensory week, the children were thrilled to explore and learn about the five senses (Touch & feel, Sight, Taste, Smell and Sound) through interesting activities:

Touch and feel Sensory box: The ‘Touch and feel’ sensory box was an amazing sensory activity that really challenged the toddlers to hone their sense of touch to identify hidden objects in the box. In order to make the sensory box, two holes were simply cut on either side of a box in such a way that the child’s hands could fit in comfortably. Inside the box were a variety of objects (such as tomato, peas from the refrigerator, bubble wrap, soft ball, hot roti, coconut shell, walnuts, and groundnut shells, and so on) that the children could hopefully identify by touch.

Mesmerize with the nature’s beauty with creative binoculars: Children were instructed to make their own creative binoculars for a sense of sight and these were a big hit and super easy to make. In order to make binoculars, they had to connect two toilet paper rolls/chart paper rolls and fix them together. Then, they attached a string to both ends to make perfect binoculars. Children enjoyed colouring activities, adding stickers on to it and they loved to explore nature with their own creative binoculars.

Apple taste test: The Apple Taste Test was a wonderful way to incorporate the sense of taste. The apple slices were told to be dipped into different solutions such as sugar solution, salt solution, lemon juice, honey, and coffee. Then, children were prompted to taste the apple slices from each bowl and identify the taste. Children thoroughly enjoyed the tasting activity and they could find out the different tastes such as sweet, salty, sour, and bitter.

Chocolate making: A perfect activity to end the sensory week, wherein the children had so much fun mixing the biscuit powder, cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, and milk to make yummy chocolate. They could sense the smell of chocolate and enjoyed the taste as well. A virtual tour to the chocolate factory was also arranged and children were so happy to know about the process of chocolate making.

Children were very much indulged in all the sensory activities and it was an amazing learning experience with lots of fun for the tiny tots.
