GIIS Balewadi GMP Students Explored the World of Science with Magic Water and Pencil Experiment

The students of Nursery, K1, and K2 explored the fascinating world of science through the Magic Water and Pencil Experiment, as part of Thinking Thursday.

The experiment involved a fascinating demonstration where students observed pencils being pierced through a water-filled ziplock bag without causing any leakage. Teachers guided students step-by-step, explaining the science behind the phenomenon. They highlighted that the ziplock bag is made of a plastic polymer—a material consisting of long chains of flexible molecules. When a pencil is poked through the bag, these molecules temporarily stretch and form a seal around the pencil, preventing water from escaping.

Students were encouraged to perform the experiment themselves, carefully observing the process and noting the results. Beyond the scientific explanation, the activity served as a platform to enhance multiple skills.

By engaging in the experiment, students developed critical thinking skills understanding the underlying science and reasoning behind the experiment. They also developed problem-solving skills wherein they explored what could happen under different conditions or with different materials.

Students also enhanced their communication skills, discussing their observations and insights with peers and teachers. They carefully monitored each step of the experiment to notice changes and outcomes, adding to their observation and concentration skills.

Activities like these play a crucial role in nurturing a scientific temperament among students. By experiencing science through experiments, students move beyond theoretical learning and gain practical insights into how things work in real life. This approach not only makes science enjoyable but also helps them retain knowledge more effectively. It fosters curiosity, encouraging them to question, explore, and understand the world around them. Such initiatives contribute significantly to a student's holistic development. They develop confidence by experimenting independently, enhance their teamwork skills through collaborative discussions, and ignite a lifelong passion for learning.

Through such creative and interactive initiatives, Thinking Thursday continues to ignite curiosity and foster a love for learning among students, making science both fun and meaningful.
