In today’s times, the pool of opportunities is unlimited. Unlike the old times, where becoming an engineer or a doctor were considered to be esteemed, today sky is the limit. Individuals are becoming artists, musicians, actors, writers etc. Arts has gained so much popularity and individuals are doing extremely well too. We look up to them for inspiration and adore them. Today people are becoming more modern and giving a chance to not only their profession but also their passion. After all, isn’t following your passion and dreams what brings you the greatest happiness and satisfaction? As exciting as the number of available opportunities may sound, it sometimes can get quite overwhelming and confusing to choose one path that fits them well. At this time of doubt, the one person everyone turns to and trusts as a constant source of knowledge and encouragement is the Parent.
We had the opportunity to hold a webinar with one such parent, Ms Nirmala Shanker, hosted by GIIS student Ayush Kanga. Ms Nirmala shared her journey of how she made her passion her career. She started by speaking about the importance of ECAs & CCAs. She said it’s important to take up leadership roles and participate in extracurriculars in school to develop and hone our skills and identify our passion. She stressed upon the fact that continuous practice is the key to ultimate success.
She then went on to talk about her professional life. She is a former IT professional, specializing in business development for animation, television programming for children, and digital media consulting for media & entertainment companies. She had a passion for writing and after 14 years she left the corporate world to pursue her passion.
She started writing and blogging full time. Her blog ‘Simple Moments of Life’ captures stories and thoughts about the everyday moments of her life. She is also an established author with two successfully published books. Her books are titled - ‘The Tin Cat And Other Stories For Children’ & ‘Simple Sojourns’. Apart from being an author, she is an avid storyteller, a voracious reader and a trained classical singer.
She then went on to tell the audience how they can embark on their writing journey and what steps they can follow for a start. She spoke about her experiences and learnings. She shared the steps to writing or blogging and self-publishing the work. She also reflected on the career path one can choose as a writer. Being a writer does not mean just writing novels. One can be a video game writer, lyricist, copywriter, comic book writer, scriptwriter, journalist, social media manager, etc. All these career paths require good writing skills.
“Identify your passion, keep practising and strive for perfection,” she said.
The session ended with her answering questions from our audience. It was a very interesting session for not only an aspiring writer but also for someone who wishes to pursue a career following their passion.
