SMART talk with Ms Amala Menon

GIIS SMART Campus held a webinar for students of grade 2 to grade 5 on May 6 with Ms Amala Menon who founded SaveAgram, a social enterprise started with the aim of providing livelihood to villages and preserving some of the sustainable farming and living methods that are seen in rural communities.

With the world moving towards sustainability and consuming organic food, it has become important more than ever to safeguard the environment and protect the rural areas and villages that are farming these products. SaveAgram facilitates homestays in the Himalayas and Kerala and buys and sells farm produce. The organisation is run with the help of volunteers.

The webinar was hosted by two students, Akshara Marthy of grade 5 and Aarohi Singh of grade 4. At the start of the webinar, students portrayed a short skit highlighting the importance of sustainability and getting the best from waste and how to protect the environment by practising the 3R’s. The webinar then proceeded to Ms Amala Menon introducing the students to the idea of organic farming and helping villages and rural areas sustain themselves to continue farming.

Students were given insight on how to uphold the forgotten gems of the world such as old age traditions, cultures, values and the architecture of villages. She inspired our young learners to join hands to save the environment and encouraged them to produce organic food. She gave tips on how to preserve our beautiful villages as our students questioned her on how to do their bit to save the environment.
