Secondary students conduct a sanitary pad donation drive aimed at eliminating period poverty

Period Poverty is the inability to afford and access menstrual healthcare products and many low-income families throughout Singapore are silently struggling with this issue. Recognising the same, SMART Campus IB Yr 1 students, Arushi Jadhav and Anoushka Jadhav conducted a sanitary pad donation drive within the school campus in collaboration with a non-profit organisation, Go with The Flow. The drive conducted between August 22 and 26 received an overwhelming response from students and teachers and garnered over 1000 sanitary pads.

A video was also created and circulated among students educating them about the cause and bringing about social change.

According to statistics provided by SingStat, nearly the bottom 20% of Singapore households face a deficit of around $4020. The cost of menstrual health care products further adds to this deficit, leading these households to use their finances for other basic necessities and compromising on menstrual healthcare and hygiene. GIIS has always nurtured its students with strong values of community care and provides numerous opportunities for the students to give back to the society. Opportunities like this help the entire school community become socially responsible citizens and bring about positive changes in the society.
