As part of the Earth Week celebrations and to inculcate environmental awareness among the PYP students, the SMART campus organised a plethora of creative and meaningful activities between April 18 and 22. During the week, students got several opportunities to showcase their creative prowess by creating artworks, participating in discussions on the impact of human actions on mother Earth, and pledging towards taking positive actions for a greener future.
The young students showcased their creative expertise by writing poems and paeans expressing their love and gratitude towards mother Earth. They took pledges to work towards achieving sustainable Earth and added them in their beautifully designed hand cut-outs. The students also performed skits and role-play to convey the importance of our actions or inactions in protecting the Earth.
On Earth Day, i.e., April 22, the day started with an insightful discussion with Ms Nancy Martin, a dedicated educator who has worked with the UN Peace Corp, and has educated several teachers and students through a peace curriculum. She has introduced GIIS to the Global Peace Art Project, a global art exchange programme.
As part of the project, Ms Komal Agarwal, PYP 3 teacher and global sustainability advocate, along with Mr Murlindran R, Visual Arts teacher encouraged students to create artworks aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. A thoughtfully curated exhibition was organised on the school premises displaying the beautiful artworks of the students, which will be shared with three other schools across the world.
The Earth Week celebrations culminated with the inauguration of PYP Garden Club with the intent of hoping to safeguard our biggest resource, mother Earth. The initiatives taken as part of the Earth Week celebrations are in line with GIIS’s 9GEMS holistic development programmes, wherein students participate in activities for the community and social improvement, learning to contribute towards the sustainability of the planet.
