Primary students participate in a music workshop with Padma Shri Vikku Vinayakram

Primary students at the GIIS SMART Campus got an excellent opportunity to participate in a music workshop on Feb 17, 2023. The enriching workshop was conducted by legendary percussionist and Padma Shri Vikku Vinayakram, along with his talented son Selvaganesh and grandson Swaminathan.

The three generations have performed together at various music festivals and concerts worldwide celebrating Indian culture with their unmatched musical dedication. Vikku Vinayakram, who is also known as the God of Ghatam is the recipient of numerous awards and is credited with popularising Ghatam.

The event started with a beautiful song performance by the primary students, followed by an interactive music session between the three generations of the talented musical family and the students. As part of the workshop, the students learned about traditional musical instruments including ghatam and kanjira. They also learned about sound and rhythm by clapping their hands and making various sounds using their voices. The students were delighted to discover that they could create their own rhythms and beats, and became more confident as the workshop progressed.

Talking to the students, Selvaganesh emphasised the importance of practice and discipline in mastering an instrument. He also spoke about the importance of following one’s passion to achieve success. The students also excitedly participated in a question and answer round wherein they learned about the musical journey of the renowned musicians, and their experience of working on various projects and with renowned musicians from around the world.

Overall, it was a great learning experience for the students as they got an opportunity to engage in an interactive session with some of the eminent personalities from the field of music. Events like this at GIIS help the students to develop international-mindedness and grow as strong global leaders of the future.
