Yoga enthusiasts showed up in full force at the GIIS SMART Campus on the occasion of the International Yoga Day which is observed worldwide on June 21 each year.
A large number of students, parents and members of the Singapore community joined in to perform various Yoga poses under the instructions of volunteers from the Nikam Guruji Yoga Kutir. Members of GIIS staff also joined in the two-hour long session.
International Yoga Day is the initiative of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has been celebrated annually worldwide since its inception in 2015. It is held on the first day of summer, known as the Summer Solstice, in the northern hemisphere - a day which hold special significance for many cultures of the world.
In Singapore, the Indian High Commission observed the day by holding yoga sessions in many parts of Singapore. GIIS, too, did its bit by holding one session at its seminar room, where yoga enthusiasts spread their mats and performed many poses.
Yoga is an ancient discipline that dates back to thousands of years and is known to have physical and mental health benefits. GIIS is an advocate of this discipline, and holds free yoga sessions for all interested every Saturday at the SMART Campus.
