GIIS student's first aid training proves life-saving

On April 26, Janhavi Yadav, an IBDP Year 1 student at SMART Campus, used her quick thinking and first aid training to save an elderly woman at a local condominium pool. Janhavi, President of the Red Cross Youth GIIS Chapter, had completed a Standard First Aid course three months prior, which equipped her with the skills to identify and act in emergencies.

That morning, Janhavi was preparing for school and revising for a chemistry formative assessment. Around 7:45 am, she noticed an emergency unfolding outside her window. She saw two elderly women who swam every morning in the pool below. To her shock, one of the women appeared to be drowning and was being pulled toward the pool's edge by the other.

A bystander arrived to help but seemed unsure of what to do next. Despite having the necessary knowledge, applying it in a real-time situation was challenging. The trainers had emphasised the importance of acting under pressure and with a presence of mind, skills Janhavi now had to rely on.

Realising the urgency, Janhavi rushed to the pool and knelt beside the unconscious woman. The assisting man asked if she was CPR trained, and Janhavi confirmed. She quickly assessed the situation and began administering CPR. After a while, the woman gasped and started trying to breathe, although she was foaming at the mouth.

Another bystander called an ambulance, and the first responders reiterated the importance of positioning her sideways. Paramedics arrived shortly afterward, took over her care, and transported her away on a stretcher. Janhavi informed them of the duration and timing of the CPR she had administered.

Later, the condominium management informed Janhavi's mother that the woman was in the ICU. A few days later, the woman's family expressed their gratitude to Janhavi for her assistance. They revealed that the woman had suffered a heart attack while in the pool. Doctors emphasised that even a minute's delay in getting help could have cost her life and highlighted the importance of timely and correct CPR. The elderly woman is now back home and recovering.

Janhavi's quick thinking and application of her first aid training played a crucial role in saving the woman's life, demonstrating the importance of emergency preparedness and the effectiveness of CPR in critical situations. The incident highlights the exceptional training and education provided at GIIS, where students are equipped with life-saving skills and a strong sense of responsibility.
