Ex-GIIS students, Rahul Parthasarathy and Rahul Bhattacharjee, of CBSE 2018 batch, won third prize in the Singapore-India Hackathon competition held at Nanyang Technical University (NTU), in November 2018. Their team “Rakshacam” won a cash prize of SGD 4000 which was presented to them personally by Mr Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India.
Singapore-India Hackathon is a new initiative proposed by Mr Narendra Modi and Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills, Singapore. The Hackathon is going to be a yearly event to be held alternate year in Singapore and India.
The Hackathon held recently at NTU was the first in series and was attended by 20 teams from each country. The theme revolved around making NTU a smart campus. Various problem statements were allocated to different teams – betterment of navigation around campus, finding the desired carpark lot, move safely across the campus, manage the university’s digital identity, and so on.
Team “Rakshacam”, was given the problem statement of making parking lots more efficient. During the 36 hour Hackathon challenge, the team came up with an innovative product called “Spherica”, that is an all-in-one solution to detect vehicles (computer vision) and send the information to an IOT server attached to a 360 camera. A compute neural stick called movidius attached to this setup trains the data to detect cars. The product was highly appreciated by the experts.
As shared by Rahul Parthasarathy, “it was an amazing experience” to participate in the event. It was a humbling experience for him to meet the Indian PM Mr Modi who spoke to him in detail about his product and its feasibility. Later, he patted his shoulder and said: “keep it up”.
Both, Rahul Parthasarathy and Rahul Bhatacharjee, were among the top 10 scorers of CBSE 2018 exam and are currently pursuing their higher studies in SUTD.
