e-Waste drive by GIIS Hunger Warriors encourages recycling

The GIIS Hunger Warriors organised an 'e-Waste Drive' on February 24, 2021, in collaboration with two non-profit organisations, with the intention to help the needy and underprivileged sections of society. We believe that real-world challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and hunger have solutions.

The e-Waste, which comprised working laptops and laptop accessories, was collected after a systematic brainstorming and execution session with the help of the school, the management, teachers, NGOs and our enthusiastic peers who chipped in to do their part.

The Hunger Warriors, which is a team of Green and Sustainability enthusiasts led by myself Jaidev Balaji along with Arushi Jadhav and Anoushka Jadhav, researched the topic of e-Waste and found that only 1 in 10 Singaporeans recycle e-Waste. However, recycling of these devices help keep toxic material out of landfills, allows reuse of valuable parts for new products, as well as to channelise the spare parts for productive usage.

After a lot of ideation, Hunger Warriors communicated with the agencies to carry their healthy environment drive. They created posters, drafted slogans, and spread the word about e-Waste, and executed the drive to spread awareness. The presentation caught the eye of a non-profit organisation that offered to support the endeavour by sponsoring the Hunger Warriors website.

We have been commended by the MP and Mayor of Central Singapore Ms Denise Phua for our efforts to tackle hunger at a grassroots level and have also been awarded the United Nations Global Social Leaders Impact Award 2020.

The drive got tremendous response from all walks of society. This enriching experience gave us an insight into organizing events, meticulously executing them and this had an overwhelming response from our school.
