Tiny tots made to learn and practice various Human Values

Human Values constitute an important aspect of self-discipline and serve as guiding principles to an individual. The special week celebrated by the pre-primary students of GIIS Noida described the need of Human Values in the era of digital education especially where everything has gone online. The idea was to generate a positive impact of human values among the children.

The week was celebrated over five days with the focus on different values to learn, understand and practice every day. Each day had activities planned according to the key value and a dress code was to be followed for the celebrations.

Day one was all about having gratitude for the things we have in our life. The dress code for the day was of Green colour. Children were engaged in a Gratitude-Happiness activity where they were taught about the importance of valuable natural resources. During the activity, the students were asked to switch off the lights & fans of their rooms for a couple of minutes and then switch them on after a while. This helped them in realizing the importance of these small things in life and also to be thankful for them.

Further, each child was also asked to choose a plant from their balcony and be friends with it. Children were made to paint the pot with beautiful colours. The idea was to help students adopt a humanitarian approach with livings things (plants in this case) and take care of them like their very own sibling or best friend.

Craft activity was another segment for the students to understand and imbibe the value of gratitude in life. Wheel of thankfulness was created by using circle-shaped cutouts. Each cut out was marked with another circle inside, which was further divided into six equal parts. Children were then asked to write six things they are thankful for in life.

On day two the students were asked to wash their toys and understand that it is their responsibility to keep things neat and clean always. They were told to arrange material like a tub with soap liquid, toys to wash, and another tub filled with clean water. Children had fun while doing the activity as they washed their toys. It was a fun experience for both teacher and the students. Through this activity, they learnt to take care of their things and surroundings, and also to keep them neat and clean. The dress code for this activity was yellow colour.

Day three was dedicated to the value of Truth & Honesty. Teachers narrated the story named ‘’The boy who cried to wolf’’ to the children through an interesting PPT that taught them the value of Truth. Through this, they were able to understand how truth and honesty always prevail and cannot be defeated. Children wore blue coloured outfits to participate in the activity.

Day four was all about learning and understanding about Peace and Harmony. The importance of these values in one’s life was emphasized through an informative video related to the theme. Children wore white coloured outfits and promised to be a peacemaker. Lastly, they also participated in a one-minute meditation session to conclude their learning of the values.

Lastly, the human values week was concluded on day five with learning the values of Kindness and Sharing. Orange coloured outfits were the dress code for the day. Children were educated on the two values through a powerpoint presentation and a story narration on “the giving tree” that taught them about sharing things and positive behaviour with others. Students were encouraged to donate their old clothes and belongings to the people in need around them.

Children were able to understand the importance of giving things and how one experiences happiness by sharing with the needy. They were made to feel thankful for the things they are blessed with.

The idea was to help students realize the importance of such values in our life. These values make us who we are, shape us into better humans, and give a new meaning to our life. Once we imbibe these values, we become happy and satisfied in life which is the most important thing to have.
