Students participate in an array of Math Magic activities

Math Magic is a combination of tricks that promote hands-on learning of the mathematical concepts where each child gets an opportunity to understand in-depth about the “why’s” of the concept rather than just learning the “how’s”. These tricks lit up any math classroom and even foster a sense of curiosity among the young minds waiting to dive into the world of numbers.

GIIS Noida keeps conducting such math magic activities regularly for pre-primary and primary students, to help them in creating a strong base and foundation of their mathematical knowledge and reasoning. The month of August, yet again, was power-packed with such activities for the students to teach them the basics of the concepts which they will remember for a lifetime.

Let’s have a look at the various activities conducted across grades:

Sorting of Coins - K2 students

To teach students the concept of sorting the numbers through coins, children were asked to arrange coins in different baskets depending upon their numeric value. For example, 1 rupee coin was put in basket one, 2 rupee coin was put in basket number two, so on and so forth. Further to tally the number of coins sorted, each child prepared a sheet to count and record the number of coins sorted in all the baskets.

By participating in this activity, students were able to recognize different types of coins available, understand the concept of sorting better, and improve their reasoning and analytical skills at the same time.

Apple Tree Math Game - Grade 2

In this activity, students created their own game named “Apple Tree Math” that fostered strategic thinking, problem-solving skills besides developing fluency in carrying out addition and subtraction of numbers in daily life.

To perform this activity, students were supposed to cut out a paper tree, number strips, and sketch pens to label the numbers. Each child showcased the final creation in front of their peers to explain the sum or difference, basis of the questions asked by the teacher. The purpose of the activity was to teach the students how to add and subtract numbers without using objects and pictures, and to model them simply and playfully without much hassle.

The sole purpose of engaging the students in such activities was to enable them to be proficient while performing calculations and be accurate and quick at the same time. It not only motivates the young minds but also encourages them to understand the concept from its root, thus enabling them to be confident and develop an enthusiasm for numbers from an early age.
