Sailing on a Sea of Words: An online workshop on Phonics

Global Indian International School, Noida hosted a unique and useful workshop on Phonics for parents of the pre-primary segment. The workshop was conducted virtually through a webinar and was attended by more than 300 children and parents pan India. Parents got the opportunity to understand the use and implementation of phonics in day to day activities that make learning a fun task for their young ones.

The training session began with a formal introduction of the faculty who was going to train parents on the day’s agenda; Ms. Suneeta Karki and Ms. Nisha Goradia began by introducing the concept of Phonics and how it can invariably change their child’s way of grasping the language skills (like reading and speaking) at home. They guided parents through various stages of the topic and encouraged them to practice it the same way as it’s done in their class at GIIS.

The trainers emphasized different aspects of the topic i.e. correct usage of blends and sight words to improve their speaking skills. They stressed the importance of learning phonics correctly so that our students grow up to be great speakers and perfect writers. Ms. Nisha introduced the phonic sounds of the alphabets through the phonic song.

The game round was the most anticipated part of the webinar as parents and children had to guess and write the beginning sound of the picture shown on the screen. Since reading and writing go hand in hand, next was a practical session on the writing of the alphabet in both upper and lowercase. The step by step guide helped students in relating to the sound of the alphabet being written. Next came a detailed explanation of the vowels and consonants and how they can help in word-formation. Three letter words comprising the CVC format were explained in detail through see and tell game.

Blends and consonant blends were taken up next to promote learning and speaking of complex words that have more than one sound. Various ways of making the learning of blends were discussed and a story based on the same was shared. Children enjoyed the storytelling session as it held their interests throughout. A quiz followed to test their understanding of the subject on the spot.

Lastly, sight words were shared with the parents followed by a Body spell game that made the concept clearer. Each aspect of the theme was taken up through a fun activity to help parents in strengthening their child’s command over speaking and writing at home.

Parents had a great learning time and were delighted to see such hard work and effort put in by the GIIS teachers; the session was full of engaging content and activities that made the understanding of phonics interesting and exciting. There were 400 questions put up by the parents that were gladly answered by the GIIS faculty. Parents appreciated and thanked the teachers and organizers for arranging such an interactive and informative workshop on a topic that isn't usually discussed.
