Primary students learn to articulate their thoughts into words during English Literary Week celebrations

Learning a language helps us to effectively communicate and understand others. In order to bring the students closer to literature and its universal appeal, the English Literary Week is observed every year at GIIS Noida. Unlike the previous years, the celebrations were conducted as per a theme based on the topic “Readers are Leaders”.

Knowledge is power, and reading is arguably one of the best ways to get ahead in your career. Through reading, you can become an expert in any subject, gain wisdom from some of the most intelligent people in the world, and develop skills necessary to become an influential and effective leader. The Literary week was celebrated to with the same objective and to infuse the understanding & love for English literature among the students. The various activities that were conducted provided an ideal opportunity to all the students to become good listeners, speakers and readers too.

During the Literary week, students were encouraged towards understanding and developing a natural inclination towards literature, improve written and spoken expression, and inculcate the habit of reading in their daily lives. Different activities were planned during the literary week for each grade which are as follow-

·     Characters are what make stories. Without a character, there is no story to tell, only a lot of scenery. To reiterate this element of a story, we at GIIS, Noida organized a ‘Character Parade’ for the students of Grade II as a part of the Literary Week celebrations. The students were encouraged to dress up as their favourite storybook character and speak a few lines to introduce their favourite character along with its most interesting characteristics. It was a rewarding and enriching experience for the students.

·     A robust vocabulary doles out a positive and direct impact on an individual’s ability to enhance their language proficiency. Having a good vocabulary can enhance the language and literary skills of a student. To ensure the same, a fun-filled activity called ‘Synonym Rolls’ was conducted for students of Grade III of the school. They made cinnamon – roll- shaped pieces of paper with a swirl drawn on them and wrote a word and the synonyms of the word. This activity really helped the students in learning new words and enhance their vocabulary.

·     Film makers make sharable dreams. They read, write, direct, shoot & edit to craft great experiences for people, their family and friends. Keeping the same in mind, we at GIIS, organized an intra class competition for grade IV students. Children were asked to make a 2-3-minute short movie that had a message/moral story to share(preferably). Which they enacted with their parents help and guidance.

·     To empower our students and to make them predispose themselves towards writing and literature in an era where social media dominates, a thought provoking activity ‘Story Elements’ Puzzle’ was organized for the students of Grade V. Each student had used cut cardboard pieces in shape of a puzzle to demonstrate their story with the help of story elements.

These activities were planned to hone listening and verbal skills, decision making, creativity, abstract thinking etc. and the week turned out to be an extremely engaging experience mixed with fun learning for the children.
