Learning and honing language skills early on

Global Indian International School (GIIS), Noida conducted Language Week for the pre-primary wing students. The activities were spread across four days for the little ones to hone their skills through various activities that were planned and conducted virtually by respective teachers.

One’s command over language can majorly be assessed in four ways i.e. an individual’s ability to read, write, listen, and speak in that particular language. Listening and reading are known as “receptive”, whereas writing and speaking are known as productive skills.

Language week began with each student greeting in two different languages of their choice throughout the week. The importance and use of language were discussed in detail and how it helps one to listen, read, and speak with others and perform numerous tasks. A story narration activity was also done by the teachers to emphasize the value of having good language skills. Students were then engaged in an art and craft activity in which they made beautiful bookmarks to be used later.

Day three was thoroughly enjoyed by our tiny tots as they played storybook character dress up; each child had dressed in their favorite character from their most loved storybook and spoke few lines about the character they had chosen in their respective virtual classes. This activity helped students brush up their confidence, imaginative skills, and creativity.

Lastly, children were engaged in a language game named spin-the-wheel that was based on the theme. Each child performed the activity which helped them in memorizing three-letter words, blends, sounds, etc. The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by each and every child as learning became a fun process.

The activities conducted over the week not only helped our students in being familiar with the language and be able to use it with confidence, work collaboratively with others and share the learning experience with familiar and unfamiliar audiences but also enabled them to express personal needs & preferences and make requests with confidence.
