Renowned kathak guru and choreographer Nishi Singh conducted a workshop for boys and girls in the school auditorium in July 2018, as part of Global Indian International School's initiatives to promote Indian culture and dance forms, under its Nine Gems pedagogy. Graceful movements, basic footwork, hand and eye movement and other finer nuances were taught to the participants at the workshop, after Ms Singh started off with dance steps on guru vandana (paying respect to the teacher) and Ganesh vandana (paying respect to God). Some theories were also taught as Ms Singh elaborated on the finer points of the dance form to help them perform steps with precision. The programme ended with a question and answer session. 'Performing Arts' is an important element of the GIIS curriculum and such workshops give our students an opportunity to grow as an individual and to learn elements that contribute to the authenticity of Indian culture. Ms Singh, who started her journey at a tender age of 6 years under the mentorship of Guru Pt. Rajendra Gangani, has also studied the art under Padma Vibhushan Guru Pt. Birju Maharaj and Guru Smt. Urmila Nagar. Ms Singh is a 'Grade A' artist with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting India as well as an empanelled performer of ICCR (Indian Council of Cultural Relations). She recently got awarded with "AEKALAVYA" award by Lasyakala, OSUAE and The Consulate General of India on 13th April, 2018. |
