Grade 2 students learnt the concept and implementation of tally marks

“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding.”

To lay a strong foundation and concept clarity of Mathematics among the Grade 2 students of GIIS Noida, a fun and engaging activity was conducted as a part of the Math Magic programme with great zeal and enthusiasm.

By participating in this activity, students learned and understood about Tally marks, which are also known as hash marks. They understood that tally marks are a unary numeral system that are mainly used to keep the record of a running or continuous count. These marks are useful for recording and maintaining the scores in a game or a sport.

Our students did a “Colour car survey” activity in which they pasted different coloured car cut-outs and keep its record while doing the survey. The activity encouraged strategic thinking, problem-solving and brought fresh excitement to the math class as the students got an opportunity to do something new and unique. It gave a chance to the students to apply their learning in different contexts, and the opportunity to explain and discuss the mathematics involved with their peers- often without fear of failure. Each child participated and enjoyed learning about data handling.

To perform this activity, students used sheets, different colour car cut-outs, glue, and sketch pens. They presented the final presentation and showcased their most popular car colour as per their recorded data. During the activity, students also asked questions to their friends and family members related to their survey.

This activity proved quite useful as it helped the students in developing their fine as well as gross motor skills. It was a great experience for each child as they got to learn through the play-way method that is always rewarding.
