GIIS Noida’s Annual Sports Day brings back the Indigenous Sports

India's rich culture and history have always been deeply rooted in sports and games. Unfortunately, traditional games like Lagori, Gilli-Danda, Kanche etc. have been entirely forgotten by today's youth since they are so absorbed in playing video games. The days when children eagerly anticipated going outside to play some Pithoo or Kith-Kith (Hopscotch) with their buddies are long gone. This has resulted in numerous health problems in children.

Therefore, to bring back the charm of old games and to encourage children to come and play, GIIS Noida celebrated its Annual Sport Day in the campus after a gap of two years on the theme Indigenous Sports. The theme was based on the idea of giving students a chance to reconnect and relive their childhood days of playing games like pithoo, archery, etc. and inculcate strong friendships, learn team work, and promote physical fitness among students.

The celebrations spanned over three days and were held in the school ground of the campus. All three days saw participation from students from pre-primary to grade 9 and 11. The opening ceremony was held on 19th December 2022 and was graced by famous sports journalist Mr. G Rajaraman. He has been in the journalism industry for 37 years and is a known name in the print, web, TV, and radio platforms. Mr. Rajaraman has worked with some globally reputed newspaper brands like The Hindu, The Pioneer, and Hindustan Times.

The fusion of modern and traditional races was a treat to watch for the parents who joined the fun and witnessed all the action through Facebook live. Races like Lagori race, sac race, matka race, archery race, tyre race, chariot race, shotput race, tail my drachen, hoola hoop race, obstacle race, etc. were carried out is most spectacular manner. Applause and cheer were the emotions for each member of the GIIS Noida community on all three days of the sports day celebrations.

Speaking to the students, teachers and the live audience, Mr. Rajaraman shared his happiness on how GIIS is making efforts to encourage students in taking up at least one sport every year. He also spoke at length about the value of sports in one’s life and how it teaches good moral values and shapes their personality.

Since the event was happening physically in the campus first time after the pandemic, it was extremely exciting to witness the students putting up an impressive feat of talents and skills. They competed house wise and performed in various drills, gymnastics, dances like Zumba and PT, march past, yoga, etc. to bag the most anticipated trophy of the year i.e. Overall House trophy which was given to the Hibiscus house on the last day of the three day sports show.

Sports Day celebrations truly depicts how GIIS encourages students to take up activities/sports that allows them to rise and become the best in their choice of areas. The annual sports day is a perfect portrayal of the GIIS 9GEMS pedagogy that emphasises on excellence in sports as a major part of holistic development in students.
