Community helpers activity for grade 1 students

Helpfulness is an important part of good human social development, and there are many excellent ways of teaching children to practice being helpful. From putting toys back on the shelf to collecting food for neighbours in need; there are plenty of ways that can add value to our lives and teach us so much that books can’t.

Grade 1 students of Global Indian International School (GIIS), Noida were introduced to the many grown-ups who make our lives better and comfortable through the speak-up activity on community helpers. The objective was to educate the students about their contribution so that the next time they come across or visit a community helper, they can thank or appreciate them for their services.

Throughout our communities — at home, at school, at the library, or the store — we meet hard-working men and women who make our lives easier every day by offering specialized services. We often fail to express gratitude and thankfulness for these services that add so much value to our existence. Through this activity, students got a chance to express how they feel and how much they respect such people. Each child was dressed up as their favourite community helper and spoke a few lines about the job role they play.

This activity was also a perfect way of improving the children’s speaking skills and vocabulary along with enhancing their emotional and social skills. Each child was able to understand the variety of roles these community helpers play and how they will also become a part of this circle once they grow up.
