On June 29th, 2024, during Parents' Engagement Day and Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTM), the Cambridge Department at GIIS KL saw a vibrant collaboration between students and parents. Year 6-10 Editorial Club members took the opportunity to showcase their creativity and communication skills through a comprehensive activity booklet they’ve compiled.
These enthusiastic young journalists had been busy documenting various events and assemblies hosted by the Cambridge Department. Filled with photos and write-ups, these booklets aimed to provide parents with a glimpse into the enriching experiences offered to their children.
Armed with their booklets, the Editorial Club members distributed them to parents attending the PTM. This wasn't just a one-way street. The students actively sought feedback from parents. They wanted to know what resonated and what improvements could be made, both for the booklets and for future Cambridge Department events.
This initiative resonated with several key aspects of GIIS 9GEMS Framework. It fostered personality development (Gem 4) by encouraging students to take initiative and showcase their work. Additionally, it aligned with universal values and ethics (Gem 7) by promoting communication and active listening. Most importantly, it exemplifies skills development (Gem 9) by honing writing, editing, and presentation skills.
The Editorial Club's project also falls under SDG 4: Quality Education of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. By fostering a culture of communication and feedback, both students and the Cambridge Department can continue to refine their offerings.
This event proved to be a success on multiple levels. Students gained valuable experience while sharing their work with the school community. Parents were offered a window into their children's academic journey. It serves as a perfect example of how student-led initiatives can contribute to a vibrant learning environment.
