Weeklong challenging mathematics activities inspire students

The annual weeklong mathematics activities held at GIIS Tokyo provided the students with opportunities to demonstrate their inner talent and share their knowledge with their schoolmates.

This year the activities took place from July 8-12 at the Higashi-Kasai High School Campus. Students of grades 6 to 10 of both CBSE and Cambridge programs took part in a variety of weeklong activities.

The respective mathematics teachers of grades 6, 7 and 9 gave the topics to the students, and the students, in turn, came up with a variety of innovative ideas to work on them. Grade 8 students, however, decided to be one step ahead and choose their own topics.

The following topics were undertaken by different grades for their activities:

Grade 6: Addition of integers

Grade 7: Pythagoras theorem and presentation of different kinds of angles through models

Grade 8: Exterior angle of a triangle and making a human calculator through a model

Grade 9: To find the day for any given date in history or future; Age Calculator using patterns and codes.

Grade 9 and 10 IGCSE: Finding the bearing of different airports using maps

Grade 10: Survey on students’ favorite subject; To make a Clinometer for finding the height of a building.

Whether the students were given the topics by their teachers or they chose to decide their own topics, the exemplary presentation, teamwork, decision making and completion of activities before time was truly extraordinary.

It was apparent throughout the week that the students strongly believe in the saying, "The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team”.

The students were innovative, creative and enthusiastic throughout their participation in the activities. The competitive environment was evident inside each classroom and the students got to complete their activities while learning different concepts.
