Martyr's Day at GIIS India

GIIS Whitefield

Martyr’s day, also known as Shaheedi Diwas or Sarvodaya Diwas, is the most poignant day in the Indian history. It’s a day when Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathu Ram Godse in a public gathering. Marking 70th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, each GIIS campus in India paid a heartfelt tribute to the father of the nation with absolute emotions and integrity.

Each campus marked their condolences and respects to the propagator of nonviolence and the freedom fighters of the country in their own special way.

GIIS Noida conducted a special assembly for students of all the grades to apprise them with the details of the incident that shook the entire nation back in 1948. Slogans, patriotic songs and video recitals on the freedom struggle formed the essence of the assembly. Global Indian International School (GIIS) Indore, however observed a two minute silence amidst their annual day celebrations, to pay their heartfelt tribute.

GIIS Ahmedabad organized a special assembly where children recited few famous poems and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the Indian martyrs. A short video was played to acquaint the audience with the significance of the day. The Principal also spoke briefly about Gandhi Ji’s principles and ideologies of truth, nonviolence, peace and love.

GIIS Balewadi conducted a special assembly that began with a simple yoga asana - inhale and exhale. Breath is Prana or vital force. So, for all physical and mental functions, breath is very important. Highlighting the importance of Bapu's value and daily routine, all sang 'itni shakti hamey dena data...'. And, sharp at 11 am, a two minute silence was observed after which students were briefed about Gandhi Ji’s values relating it to the core values of GIIS.

Teachers and students of GIIS Bangalore observed Martyr’s day in classrooms by observing a two minute silence in calm, followed by an inspiring talk imparted by teachers on the significance of the day and the value it holds for the youth of today. Slogans and values preached by Gandhi Ji were shared by students through worksheets. “Assassination of the father of our nation by Nathuram Godse was brutal and a huge loss for India” said the students.

GIIS Surat also conducted a special assembly and observed a two minute silence to mark their respects and tribute. Later a quiz competition on the historical Indian freedom struggle was also organized. Patriotic songs were sung and speeches were given by teachers to apprise the students with the sacrifices of freedom fighters that got us freedom. It also reminded them of their duties towards our motherland.

Each GIIS campus across India and Asia religiously follows the teachings of Mahatma. Each campus is closely knit to his values and perspectives ensuring that they are well aware of our traditional values and culture. Through the Mahatma Gandhi Centre of Universal Values (MGCUV), each child at GIIS is well equipped with strong virtues, basic values and morals that make them more complacent in this world of moral despair.
