Little scientists enjoy Virtual Science Week

As part of the GIIS curriculum, students at the East Coast campus were in for a treat during Virtual Science Week which lasted from 4th to 8th May, 2020. The week-long event was organised to demonstrate the importance and relevance of science to the future development of our society and economy. In students' participations, they developed skills in scientific temper, attitudes, and values such as open mindedness and intellectual honesty.

Students across grade levels had a wonderful time exploring their scientific aptitudes by participating in different hands-on activities. Each student had the opportunity to expand their knowledge in the field of science and technology. Taking part with vigour and enthusiasm, they acquired understanding of scientific concepts, principles and laws, through fun-filled activities and interesting online quizzes facilitated by the Science Faculty.

The young explorers at GIIS-EC were delighted to present scientific experiments they had prepared independently at home. Some of these experiments include writing in invisible ink, creating a walking rainbow, parachute-making, and developing homemade indicators to test acids and bases. Knowledge in Physics was also put to the test as students had a great time practicing shadow size changing with change in distance, visualizing refraction, optical illusion and electrostatic tests. These hands-on experiments reiterated the knowledge and concepts acquired by them in classrooms and through books.

Blending Science with engineering, GIIS-EC students displayed creativity and resilience of thought while coming up with useful designs to showcase their knowledge. Primary students built models and made posters on human parts like a tooth, the brain, heart, and even DNA models using materials they could easily find at home. Secondary students built models and posters to display biodiversity and conservation, through the use of technology.

The fruitful event sheds a delightful assurance that the students at GIIS-EC thrive in innovation and curiosity. It was most certainly an enjoyable Virtual Science Week for the entire cohort, teachers alike!
