Quality Day, renamed as Global Excellence Day, witnessed a landmark launch at the East Coast campus in October 2019, to recognise quality performance, innovation, growth and sustainability practised at GIIS.
This year’s celebration was extra special because it coincided with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a revolutionary social activist whose legacy inspires movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The Guest of Honour for the event was Mr Patrick Lim, Director, Enterprise Singapore.
As part of the Opening ceremony, the auditorium foyer which boasted an Excellence Gallery of poster display of all the Quality Circles to be presented by the students was inaugurated by GOH. Student representatives from each grade presented their Quality Circles in the gallery and briefly spoke about it to the GOH. Top two award-winning Quality Circle of 2018-19 - Kindness and Kidz Amaze were also presented.
The event began with a solemn classical dance performance by the students. This was followed with the welcome address by the Principal, Ms Madhu Khanna, Keynote address by Mr Ratin Khandhadia, Director of Global Centre for Educational Excellence and address by the Guest of Honour, Mr Patrick Lim.
In his address, Mr Patrick Lim stressed the fundamentals of excellence by putting one’s heart and soul into their work. He said excellence is achieved only through discipline, good mindset and by pushing oneself to do well in life. He urged the students to look beyond GIIS and Singapore and be the change that they want to be in this world. He ended his speech with a quote of Steve Jobs “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish”.
To declare the Excellence Day Open, balloons were released in the auditorium by the GOH and members of the management. The day’s events started with Quality Circles, which are also named as Action Research Consulting (ARC), Grades 1 to 5 in the morning session. The afternoon session comprised of students from Grades 6&7.
The Class teacher acted as a facilitator and the students brainstormed to find solutions to problems using Nominal Group Technique, root cause analysis and an action plan. This was followed by the teachers ARC. Esteemed judges from GCEE, Ms Arati Mhatre, Ms Nupur Naithani, Ms Sweety Gathani, were roped in to judge the students and teachers. After every presentation, there was a Q&A session.
Parents, sitting in the audience, also participated in the Q & A session and applauded the students and teachers for putting their best foot forward. The best three Quality Circles from the student and teacher category were awarded trophies and cash prize.
On the whole, there were 21 Student ARCs presented by students from Grades 1-7. Total of 105 students participated in the ARCs. There were 8 Teacher ARCs that were presented by teachers. Total 40 teachers took part in the presentation. About 30 students participated in cultural performances. To break the monotony of the back to back presentation, the students performed a western dance number and a French song in between the presentations.
Global Excellence Day inspired everyone present to maintain quality in all walks of life. By regularly reviewing the improvement and innovation efforts, GIIS strives to remain one of the best education institutions, with every member of the school committed to excellence in all endeavours.
