GIIS East Coast Campus students attend WWF workshops at IKEA

Grade 6-8 students from GIIS East Coast got a fantastic opportunity to attend Earth Hour and Compost Gardening Workshop on March 15 and 16. The workshops were conducted by WWF at IKEA Tampines and IKEA Alexandra respectively and were centred around the theme of Climate Change and Compost Gardening.

The Earth Hour Workshop was an introductory session to the Earth Hour Movement, about the impact of climate change around the world and particularly in Singapore. Students gained insights into the circular economy and what WWF is doing to address these environmental issues.

As part of the Compost Gardening Workshop, the participants were taught gardening techniques such as the best way to pot plants, and how we can bring farms to the table. Students also learned about cultivating their own edible gardens and organic compost made from IKEA's recycled Christmas trees.

Overall, it was a great learning experience for the students gaining in-depth knowledge on sustainable gardening practices, and are excited to implement their learnings in their green campus.

GIIS’s pursuit has always been to engage students in sustainable projects to become socially responsible citizens and contribute towards bringing positive changes in society. The opportunity to participate in events like this reminds them to take the initiative towards nurturing the environment and be equal participants in the sustainability of the planet.
